Ostego Bay Oil Spill Co-op
The inland waters around Fort Myers Beach provide hours of pleasure for
boaters from around the country. Unfortunately in the case of a ruptured fuel
tank, it could spill hundreds, or even thousands of gallons of gas into the
water! This endangers wildlife and damages ecology. In response to the state of
Florida's need for trained teams to provide 1st response capabilities in these
emergencies, the Ostego Bay Oil Spill Co-op was created in 1992. This
all-volunteer group has responded to 10 separate spills last year where co-op
members responded quickly to contain loose fuel and prevented serous damage to
the environment! Ostego Bay equipment includes 2 powerboats, 2 utility towboats,
salvage pumps, a variety of containment booms, and absorbent materials to soak
up spills. There is even a 38 by 20 foot barge with a crane if needed.
